Iceberg Hike at Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop by Train from Anchorage

Hold an Iceberg on this Spencer Glacier Hike

In partnership with Alaska Railroad, your guides offer hiking from the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop along Spencer Lake to experience and learn about blue ice, up-close-and-personal!

The Spencer Glacier is located just South of Portage Valley and the Turnagain Arm in the Kenai Mountains and the Chugach National Forest. It is an entirely off-the-road system, so you will ride the train from Anchorage with breathtaking views of glaciers and towering alpine peaks.

At the Whistle Stop, the small group of 10 or fewer disembarks and boards a van for a short ride to the lake edge. The distance from the start of the hike to the edge of the Glacier is about 2 miles of flat Forest Service-maintained trails. The 3 hours spent hiking includes many photo and rest stops.

There is a $5.95 USD processing fee per order. This is a flat fee regardless of the number of tickets or tours purchased on an order.
There is a service charge per ticket. This charge will be reflected on your summary before you checkout. The total shown includes any and all taxes, fuel surcharges, and service fees. There are no additional charges, unless otherwise specified.

Cancellation Policy:

There are no refunds. All sales are final.

Change Fee Policy: If changes are allowed on a tour or activity, a $20.00 per reservation change fee will be applied for any change to a reservation. Please note that some tours and activities do not allow any changes. Date changes can be made only if we can confirm availability on the new date. While we cannot guarantee any changes can be made, all change requests must be submitted a minimum of 24 hours prior to the tour departure and must be handled on an individual basis through our Reservations Center.

This tour includes the round-trip train ticket in partnership with the Alaska Railroad, a deli lunch served aboard the train, along with trail snacks & water, bear protection and a knowledgeable naturalist guide who will provide interpretive natural history, ecology and glaciology discussions. This tour is operated under permit, Chugach National Forest.

From the Whistle Stop, hikers load onto a van for a one mile drive to the edge of Spencer Lake, where the hike begins. You will hike alongside the lake, stopping to pick up icebergs and taking photos at several Glacier viewing areas. There are outstanding views of the Glacier and icebergs floating in Spencer Lake.

The group will return to the Whistle Stop to flag down the northbound train, which is taken to Portage, where hikers board a motorcoach for their return drop-off at the Anchorage train depot.
