Spencer Glacier Hike by Train from Anchorage
Hike onto Spencer Glacier in the Alaska Wilderness In partnership with Alaska Railroad, your guides offer small group hiking along Spencer Lake and onto Spencer Glacier to experience and learn about blue ice, up-close-and-personal! The Spencer Glacier is located just South of Portage Valley and the Turnagain Arm in the Kenai Mountains and the Chugach National Forest. It is an entirely off-the-road system, so you will ride the train from Anchorage with breathtaking views of glaciers and towering alpine peaks. At the Whistle Stop, your hiking group of 5 or fewer per guide disembarks and boards a van for a short ride to the lake edge. From that start point to the edge of the Glacier is about 2 miles of flat Forest Service-maintained trails. At the Glacier's edge, the group gears up with helmets and crampons. After some safety lessons and crampon practice, groups travel out onto the glacier ice itself and have about 2 hours to explore the amazing Ice features (blue ice, crevasses, ice caves, moulins, etc) with skilled and experienced guides.

Restrooms are available aboard the train and there are outhouses at the Spencer Whistle Stop. Please Note:
From the Spencer Whistle Stop, your small group of 5 or fewer hikers per guide boards a van for a short ride on the gravel road (avoiding the crowds) to an overlook for outstanding views of the glacier and Icebergs floating in the Spencer terminal lake. The total distance from the Lake edge to the edge of the glacier is just over 2 miles of flat Forest Service maintained trails. The last 1/2 mile is rugged moraine walking. The 5 hours of hiking includes many photo & rest stops to learn about interesting local wildlife, history and glaciology. For the return trip, the group will catch the Coastal Classic Train at 8:15 pm, which takes you back to Anchorage.
